Prepping is the key here. It all has to be clean and free of oil and dirt. I used several different products for paint and roof coating. Also, instead of using a etching primer I used a Sherwin Williams product called DTM.. We cleaned and removed the coating the PO had applied. It took a great deal of time and effort.. Cleaned roof with Acetone and applied RV Seam Tape to roof joints and around Skylight. Took a J-roller and rolled the tape down also cut the seam tape in half and seamed over the roof edge before applying Putty Tape and J-Rail. After Seam Tape cleaned roof again before applying four (4) coats of Kool Seal White. Each coat applied in a different direction.
Cleaned Sides and Ends of Trailer with Acetone and then TSP mixed in Warm Water.
Now its time for primer and paint. Primer was DTM ( Direct To Metal) from Sherwin Williams. It worked great. So far has bonded to Aluminum but only time will tell.
Then Wet Sanded and shot 2 coats of Valspar Semi-Gloss White. Wet sanded again. Trailer looks great for something paint in a driveway. Still need to add red stripe.
I am about to embark on roof work on my 71 shasta 16sc, and i was curious - how did you get onto the roof? any pics? i am thinking two 2x4x10 boards run across the trailer top with a sheet of thinner wood on top to act as a platform. Terrified I'll cave in the roof!
ReplyDeletethanks for any ideas :)
